We've eaten dinner at all of the restaurants in Glen Arbor and I definitely think western avenue grill has the best food. It was our 4th time eating here and we have loved everything every time we've been in. This last time, however, we sat at the bar to grab a much needed beer and a bite to eat and moved to a table about 30 seconds after sitting down because the bartender (older gentleman with glasses and a bad attitude) was such a douchebag. Literally your only job is to smile, be friendly, and serve drinks. Get it together. By looking at other reviews I see I am not the only person that feels this way. Maybe you guys are in need of a replacement. I'm still giving this place 4 stars because the food is so good. Definitely stop in here, just don't sit at the bar.

Good solid place to go for Breakfast... I was surprised the place was empty for Breakfast but it was a good solid place to get something to eat. Not the kind of place that will be famous for its dishes but at least you know it wont be bad. The service was a tad slow but I think the waitress was new. When I am back in Glen Arbor I will try them out for dinner as well.

It's hit or miss! I've had a couple OK meals here but I would avoid anything that couldn't be caught/killed locally (e.g. don't eat the frozen lobster mush on white bread). Plus it's the only place in town with karaoke(+1 star)!

With a glass of wine and an entree, my dinner came to $40. For that, I expect good service and well-prepared food -- and maybe a few crackers on the table to tide one over through the long wait for the food to be prepared and served. There were four of diners -- one had the blackened whitefish, one the buttermilk fried chicken and two ordered mid-rare NY strips. One person also ordered the Caesar salad, which was delivered less than two minutes before the entrees were served (about 45 minutes after we'd ordered). The chicken was dry and the gravy was the consistency of tapioca pudding; it tasted mainly of flour. The whitefish was okay -- not overcooked -- but it was spiced, not blackened -- and a goopy sauce kept it from being crisp. The steaks were both properly mid-rare. But they were remarkably tough. The fish came with rice, which was not interesting but okay; all the other entrees were served with what were meant to be mashed potatoes but which were in fact whipped and gluey. Our waitress, who was much busier with the table behind ours than with ours, kept forgetting things. And we discovered, just before leaving, that she had forgotten to tell us that there were other potato options, not just the "mashed." One saving grace -- the fresh asparagus was very nicely prepared. Otherwise, I wouldn't give this place even one star.

If I could give a half star, this place would get a solid 3.5 stars. We arrived for lunch at 11:45, and were informed that we would have to wait until after noon to order lunch, as the kitchen was switching over from breakfast to lunch. We weren't in a hurry, but c'mon! I'm surprised they are able to continue this practice in such a tourist town. People wanna eat! Our server was great- very attentive, yet not super chatty- just the way I like 'em. We started off with a couple bloody mary's while we waited to be able to place our orders. They use Zing-Zang mix. While this is, in my opinion, one of the best store-bought mixes you can get, I think a place like this should spice it up a bit. And they didn't even have garnishes- no celery or pickles. We asked for pickles, and our server brought us burger-slices-pickles. A pickle's a pickle I guess. We wanted to have a bourbon and coke with our meal, so we inquired about the types of bourbon- she wasn't sure, so we went to the bar to have look. Jim Beam. That's it. The food was pretty good. I had the french dip. A nice hearty sandwich- the meat wasn't spectacular, but the au jus made up for the slight lack of flavor. And it came with tater tots, so that's a bonus point in my book. My dining partner had the ahi tuna sandwich. He was pleased, and the bite I had was excellent. The tuna was cooked perfectly rare, and the lemon aioli was delish!

Three years ago we ate here and we're back. After dinner we realized we had both ordered the same thing because it was that good. Shelli ordered pecan crusted cherry chicken and I ordered cherry glazed pork chops. They were both amazing and there will be more rejoicing for lunch tomorrow. Background music was quite uplifting and cheery. very nice atmosphere. Gina was our waitress and was quite the pro and friendly. How could I rate them any lower than 5. Thanks for another experience.

We have eaten here multiple times. The food is ALWAYS amazing! We have had the spinach artichoke dip, warm goat cheese salad, ribeye, Parmesan crusted whitefish, flatbread pizza, seaside pasta, desserts (key lime pie is awesome as is the lava cake). We have never had to wait a long time for a table or food. Service is always prompt and friendly. We love to come back when we visit GA.

Over priced, horrible service, and cold, mediocre food. Extremely expensive lunch! There is a reason there is no wait.....

    (2)
  • Mary B.

This place is very over priced for salads. The food is quality though and a good atmosphere. However, I just received a bill for 22 dollars for a salad with pecans, black beans, cucumber, tomato, cheese, and dressing. There was no meat. I could have purchased these ingredients and made 6 of these for the same price. I ain't ever coming back strictly because of price. Parking sucks too. That's all.

  • Dan R.

Don't be fooled by picky elitist guests that don't understand the food business. Out of all the restaurants in town, WA has the best quality food. With exception to the ceaser dressing everything is MADE IN HOUSE. Chef does an excellent job with steaks and seafood dishes. For a local flavor, try the whitefish (blackened is my fav). Perch is another delicious local dish. My only criticism is that they should bring back the duck in cherry sauce (wow!). Don't be scared to try the Lobster Roll, I've been to Maine and Boston many times and this dish is on point. Also...for a delicious breakfast, go to western ave!

    (5)
  • Kimberly D.

The warm artichoke dip was delicious. It was on a bed of warm, baked pita chips then covered with yummy mozzarella, parmesan cheese, and baked cherry tomatoes. Definitely enough to share. They have a decent selection of wine from local TC wine to Australian to Italian. I tried a bottle of the Southeast Australian Insurrection Shiraz-Cabernet blend and it was excellent. Our waitress was very friendly. Sat up at the bar watching the Tigers game and sipping wine. Not a bad way to spend an rainy summer evening.

Wonderful sanctuary from the tourist keep the throngs the streets of Glen Arbor in the summer do not bother with dining area head straight to bar good service fair pricing outstanding air-conditioning did I mention the tigers on TV order the Moscow Mule.

The food was very good. A bit pricey, Sandwich 14.95 The hostess was pitiful. The waitress was just ok.

The only restaurant in Glen Arbor that accepts both reservations and children! Always good, never stellar. Friendly service, and a fun birch-tree and maritime decor. Parking lot parking, right off the main drag. Special dishes such as whitefish and walleye are great, though I found some bones in my walleye. The drinks are great, and generously poured here. Best of all, they ACCEPT CREDIT CARDS. Art's Tavern across the street does not, and they sure as heck can't take a reservation!

  • Wanda L.

Surprisingly good for bar food--nice perch rather than the usual nasty bits hidden under crust, even if the crust was a bit thick. I'm not sure why they charge $3 more to sub fries with vegetables but the green beans were a perfect substitute--very fresh, al dente, and nicely salted: great idea! Also good beer list, including Short's light.

  • Michael P.

Good food. Pricey. Goat cheese salad. Was very good. It was a bit small portion though. No lobster bisque. Which was very disappointing as that was listed as a special on the board. Everyone's meal was very good but like I said overall it was extremely pricey

  • Jon G.

If this was the last restaurant on earth, I would starve to death. I would enjoy the painful death rather than having to deal with the douchebag bartender BILL. What an arrogant ASSHOLE to be running a business. Funny thing I found out, he's been that way for years. It's a wonder how they stay in business the way they treat their patrons. I should have just left without paying my bill and dealt with the consequences that would follow. Pissed that YELP made me give the douchebag establishment 1 star I do not recommend this place to anyone. DO NOT WASTE TIME OR MONEY GOING TO THE WAG!

My husband and I went here for lunch and it was delicious and great service! We split the lobster roll and warm goat cheese salad. Delicious!

  • Akira S.

Great dinner and great service, our server Morgane 206 was very nice and professional. We ordered White Fish with Parmesan ($16.95) and Perch lunch $(14.95) and those were delicious.

  • Susan D.

We rolled in with 16 people, no notice, ( 8 of them kids). Staff was AMAZING, SERVICE WAS GREAT, but best of ALL, the food was DELISH!! yeah, it was pricey, but it's Northern Michigan, prime season and why shouldn't they make a profit?? The Parmesan Whitefish was to die for..... Everyone, including All Of the kids , left happy and STUFFED.

First things first, DO NOT COME HERE WITH SHORT TIME. The kitchen is very slow. I've come here very often and it's always taken a while but my last time here we waited over an hour for our food. That being said, the food has earned them 4 stars. It's always a good meal and are open in the winter.

    (4)
  • Maddy E.

The food was good but the service was terrible. We had a reservation for 6:30 pm and expected to get out by 7:45pm to catch a sunset. We made the sunset by the skin of our teeth. For two people it shouldn't have taken over an hour to prepare one app, one entree, a soup, and a salad (we split everything because it's pretty expensive too). The waitress never checked in with us to tell us that things were slow or to apologize, which was the nail in the coffin. I understand things get busy, but it would be good to check in with your guests to let them know they weren't forgotten. I would give it another chance because the food was good, but if you are in a hurry, avoid.

Great food but pricey. Our server was great, knowledgeable and very friendly. Great area and we would eat there again. They have a patio area which is nice to watch the sites of downtown Glen Arbor.

    (4)
  • E N.

Smaller menu than what is posted online. The service was very friendly but was awful at the same time. They do not even have bread to go with soup or salad. I ordered the whitefish, which was really good, but I left starving.

    (1)
  • Gavin L.

My grandma and I came here for lunch. All in all, we had a pretty good experience. My grandma ordered the salad, which she said was good, except for the pound of pecans they put in it. I ordered the lobster roll. The lobster was good, however the bun was not a typical hot dog bun, and it just tasted like toast. All in all this place was OK.

  • Danny M.

I've eaten at the WAG since I was a kid. The servers are always nice and courteous, and the environment, with its hanging canoes and birch bark, is as rustic and inviting as ever. The menu, however, has had a major overhall in the direction of upscale and trendy cuisine. While the food was good, it was a mismatch for the atmosphere, and I miss my blu cheese whitefish platter (discontinued, but they made one specially for me).

  • Kristin F.

What a delicious spot along the main Glen Arbor drag. I recently came here with work friends on a Sunday afternoon, sun shining and the patio looking very tempting. I had an amazing Crab Cake sandwich, while the others also had fish- a sampler and Whitefish sandwiches. The ambiance is super cozy and the staff is super nice. Whether you're looking for an evening cocktail or a filling lunch, this is the spot! Love for M22!

We had both dinner here and breakfast a couple of days later. Dinner was the Walleye Picatta and the Jumbo Scallops. Both were excellent. The picatta riff with fish was a nice one that I have not seen before, but it makes a lot of sense. Breakfast was omelets and a shared order of banana bread french toast - another one of those very smart adaptations. Service was good both times even though we had a 3 and 6 year old in tow.

  • David D.

6 of us ate dinner here and were very pleased. Service was fast and polite, food was excellent and cooked according to requests (I enjoy my filet extra rare), and the portions were HUGE. Only downside was the seafood options were not local (ocean perch/Atlantic salmon). Overall I felt it was a great value for the quality of food and price point, we'll be back the next time we're in Glenn Arbor.

I've eaten here once for breakfast and several times with friends who like this restaurant. I don't think I've ever had a good meal here - they are consistently bad with their service and food quality. Last night I met up with friends there and was starving (hadn't eaten since 8 am). I ordered the smoked pork with cherry chutney, spinach and hash. I was eagerly anticipating the meal because I heard there was a new chef. The hash was almost raw, like eating barely boiled potatoes or sweet potatoes but my friends attributed that to it being a "root hash". I dug into the smoked pork chops. They tasted pretty overdone, but as I mentioned I hadn't eaten since 8 am (it was now about 8:30 pm - it took almost an hour to get our food) so I kept eating. I finally flipped the pork over and in the very dimly lit area where we were sitting, you could see that it was COMPLETELY CHARRED/BURNT. One of my friends who knows the guy that manages the place, took my plate up to said manager at the bar. The manager took the plate and left. At this point it's probably 9 pm so when the waitress asked if I wanted something else, I just said no. Here's the shocker. The bill came and they charged me 1/2 for the food because I ate almost half of the pork. I took one bite the hash, spinach & chutney and they had the audacity to charge me for half of a plate of food that NO RESPECTABLE CHEF WOULD HAVE LET LEAVE HIS KITCHEN!!!! Needless to say I won't be returning and am really disappointed. You'd think that in a small town in winter, you'd at least try to keep a local happy so that you get a return customer but evidently that's of no consequence to the people cooking and managing this restaurant. I am a firm believer in supporting local businesses but I just can't with this one anymore. Sorry!

  • Jenny M.

Great food and service but still wondering why they removed bread from the menu! Very disappointing for loyal customers to be surprised this summer with the change! Charge a little more if necessary to keep the same level of excellence.

We had a very nice white fish with rice and veggies. The service was good and friendly. I would definitely go back, but it is a little pricey.

Not impressed. Why would a place on one of the biggest freshwater fisheries in the world have ocean perch and Atlantic salmon on its menu and not fish direct from Lake Michigan. On another note my surf and turf was over cooked and the wife's meal was flavorless. Definitely not worth the money

    (1)
  • Michael A.

Very disappointed as this place came with good recommendations. Mussels were over cooked in a tasteless broth. I requested extra bread and was charged for it,. Amazing!! The large salad was ok but certainly not worth the entree price. Definite tourist trap restaurant.

Sorry to disagree but this was the worst whitefish I ever have had in 62 years in Michigan. The menu said fresh daily but when we commented on the strong fishy taste we were informed that it was flash frozen. Very disappointed and no compensation offered by the management. They are quite busy and I'm sure know that most everyone is a first time customer and likely won't come back. I feel bad for anyone who tries this fish for the first time at Western Avenue Grill because it doesn't represent how nice it should be.

    (1)
  • Steve H.

We were in need of a well-prepared piece of fish, a glass of wine and some good service. The Western came through. The portions were just right -- large pieces of white fish with good helpings of brown rice and fresh green beans. We skipped appetizers and salads and enjoyed the warm bread brought with our drinks.

We've eaten here several times this summer and all of them have been very mediocre to poor. I've been eating here for 20+ years and something about this place just doesn't work. No matter who is managing it, the service is just disorganized and, frankly, poor. Our meal tonight was the worst to date and probably our last.

Every year we take our family to Western Avenue Grill. It is good for breakfast, lunch and dinner. My daughter, husband and I had breakfast on our first day in Glen Arbor. I ordered a basic 2 eggs over easy, with toast. My daughter ordered the Eggs Benedict which were incredibly delicious looking that I was sorry I opted for a plain breakfast. Then, my husband ordered the eggs but added a short stack of pancakes which were delicious. Next time, I am ordering eggs benedict! We also ate dinner with our entire family of six and had a great time with dining outdoors on a warm, August evening. My son ordered the fall off the bone ribs which had our mouths watering. I ordered the pecan crusted wall eye, which is a main stay and I love it! The girls ordered the cherry chicken, salmon, and my husband ordered the white fish. Delicious food and not overly expensive, either. I highly recommend anyone coming to Glen Arbor to try this restaurant out, for sure!

Accomidations for 22 with separate checks means a challenge! James was up for the challenge. Beth had the seered tuna for an appetizer that she says was the best, even better than California. I had the warm goat cheese salad that truely was wonderful. Many had the perch and was very pleased with their dinner. A dirty martini turned into dirty dancing by one, but who's watching.

  • Jennifer T.

My Husband had the fish and loved it. I had a burger and it was soooo blah and boring I couldn't finish it. The food is too trendy, I'd rather keep it very simple with good ole fashioned Northwoods fish and chips, steaks and chops.

Disappointing - stopped for a late lunch (3:00 pm) with a party of 9 (5 adults, 4 children). They claimed outside seating was full (many tables had not been bused yet) so they asked that we sit inside. Waitress was friendly and attentive. It took a little longer than expected to get our food, but not horrible. For the most part, food was poor. Shrimp skewers, crab cakes, sliders (filet and crab cake) were all sub-par. Most were cold and overcooked. Ribs and the kids chicken tenders were the highlight of our meal. I would not recommend this place. If I were to end up here again, I would try the ribs again, or keep it simple with a burger or salad.

We were up in Glen Arbor after renting a house for a friend's bday weekend. It was late September so things were pretty quiet. On our way out of town we had breakfast at the Western Avenue Grill. My omelet was really great and my friend's liked their food too. The decor is cute and the service was good.

    (3)
  • Gabby M.

Service is slow and seems super frazzled when it arrives...even when the place isn't that busy. My friend got the fish sandwich and had to use her napkin to blot it beforehand because of how much grease was on it. Tots were greasy too. I would recommend trying some of the other restaurants in the area before coming here

Chef Stephen and his crew did an absolutely amazing job with our farewell brunch the morning following our wedding. He provided an amazing menu with several choices and everything was terrific. I personally had the Western Omelette which had large chunks of Canadian bacon and just the right amount of cheese. Toss in some thick swirled rye bread and I was a happy camper. My wife had the eggs benny and continually praised the Hollandaise sauce. The restaurant is right off of M22 and we took advantage of the lovely patio that catches some of the breeze coming through town. Everything on that morning was just perfect and we owe a lot to the Western Avenue Grille. They absolutely knocked it out of the park!

Sat at the bar on a Monday evening. I had the chicken portabella pasta , spouse had scallops. Both very good, but the waitress went AWOL after serving us. Came by to drop off check, never asked if we wanted dessert or drink refills. They weren't that busy, so who knows where she wandered off to.

We went here on Friday, July 26th for a drink at the bar, and to possibly order an appetizer or two. We found a seat pretty quickly even though there was a wait for dinner. When my husband went to get a menu to read, the hostess was extremely friendly and asked twice if we had our name on the list for a table. The bar, however, was another story. We sat there for at least 15 minutes with the bartender not once making eye contact, saying he would be right with us, offering a menu, or even picking up his tip from the previous customers. Another couple sat down next to us, and he walked right past us, greeted them (he seemed to know them), and got their drinks. They then decided to move to another section of the bar and he went past us twice in order to move their drinks and things. Again, no comment, no eye contact. We felt invisible!! Needless to say, we finally got up and walked out and ended up at Boone Docks down the street where we had a very friendly bartender (actually two) who immediately asked us what we wanted and even brought water and a menu to read. I actually shouldn't give this place any stars because we received nothing!! Doubt we will ever return.

Waiter suggested white fish since its caught and cooked locally. Warm, crisp white bread and soft butter are served as a free appetizer. (bread came to table after about 5 minutes after ordering.) Ambiance is friendly, comfortable & quiet. Air conditioning is great. There is no wi-fi. Indoor and outdoor seating. Food came to the table after 15 minutes. I ordered the half rack of ribs, and they were savory and delicious. food is appealing to the eye and portions are reasonable for the cost.

Just got back from a good, but not great meal at the Western Avenue Grill. A flatbread, a burger, a lobster roll and wings was $80, and that was with no drinks. Everything was ok, nothing was outstanding.

Ok, If you like tuna (raw, not seared), this is the place for you. We had their tuna appetizer with avocado and some sort of relish. Wow! It was awesome, probably one of the best tuna dishes I've ever had. The restaurant has some character, I would re-visit.

It was a gorgeous day and we really wanted to sit on the patio but boy did the hostess seem to have an issue with that. Inside was empty and patio was not even 1/2 full so not sure what was up with that. She was rude and barely spoke to us. The waitress made up for it though and was very pleasant and attentive. The food was good enough, prices okay too but I just didn't enjoy it as much as I hoped I would.

For those of you who have been coming up to beautiful GA, please note that the WAG has a new chef, a new menu and a fantastic dining experience awaiting you. We have long been wanting and needing a "tweener" establishment between Arts and Blu with a diverse set of choices and good ambiance. The WAG has now officially arrived. By the way, the Kobe Burger at just over a $1 higher price than Art's is KING of the North Woods!!

I really really wanted to love this place especially since it's such an awesome building with a great patio and a lovely cabin like interior. Unfortunately it didn't really wow me. I mean, it was good and I wasn't unhappy with my meal, it just didn't knock me out. I was waffling between getting a whitefish dish and the lobster roll. I saw a lot of recommendations on here for the whitefish but I don't see lobster roll on the menu much around these parts and I love it SO MUCH so I decided to go with that. I should have gone with my first instinct on the whitefish since it seems that's what this place is known for (as is the region). Oh well! The lobster roll was tasty but it was not what I was expecting at all. I should have anticipated it based on the fact that it came with melted munster on it but I asked for my sandwich without and thought it would be the traditional style that way. Unfortunately the sandwich still came heated up which kind of threw me for a loop a little bit. It's not that it was bad, it was definitely still good, but it wasn't what I was expecting so it was disappointed me. Something about a warm lobster salad with mayo just kind of gives me the willies. I prefer my mayo based salads cold. The french fries were fantastic though and I ate them all up up up! The restaurant itself is lovely and I loved that on a busy weekend evening in August there wasn't a wait for seating. Our waitress went kind of MIA for a bit at the end and we were in somewhat of a rush so that was a little frustrating however the prices were reasonable and the food was overall tasty so I'm sure we'll be back to give it another shot. Only that time I'll try the whitefish. :)

Not bad. Good place to come for a drink on the weekend or for lunch or supper. I'm not a big fan of their karaoke. Most people don't get too involved and everyone seems like they're too scared to join in on the singing or even get close enough to be part of the action. The food is solid though if you want a good meal. There are more interesting places in town to hang out though.

Really delicious food and a very pleasant and comfortable atmosphere. During our recent trip to the Leelanau peninsula, we were headed up to do some dune climbing and ran into a thunderstorm. As we were on the motorcycle, we decided to stop and get a quick lunch until the rains subsided. Two glasses of wine and several appetizers later, we left to climb the dunes - with full stomaches and a slightly buzzed demeanor. But it was worth every uncomfortable moment, as their food was really good. We did it all local, having the smoked whitefish pate and a blackened whitefish lunch. Everything was so good. Our server was also very helpful and sweet. I really like Glen Arbor as well - I'd definitely stay in this cute little town the next time up here!

This place is conveniently located right on the main drag, but good luck with parking.. Luckily, we were there at an off time - a late, late lunch. We dined outside, which was nice to be out in the sunshine and fresh air. Since we missed our breakfast and were starving, we went for a couple appetizers.. Artichoke dip with warm pita chips (best I've had) and smoked whitefish pate' - not a big fish eater, but this was tasty.. The entire menu had numerous selections, I wish I was in town longer to sample more! I had the warm goat cheese salad, WOW! I would go out of my way to get that again, yummy!! My boyfriend enjoyed the whitefish sandwich.. His daughter ordered the broccoli quiche which she claimed had to much broccoli in it, but hello...it's called broccoli quiche!! The service was great, our server was attentive to our needs and didn't bother us too much.. Western Avenue Grill again, yes please!!!
